D.U.D.E is a research-based education project, granted by TrygFonden and the Carlsberg Foundation, whose aim is to enable children and teenagers to get an insight into an ability to act in the digital world, as well as give them the courage to participate in digital communities without the risk of being mocked and demolished.

Each day, enormous amounts of information are produced and posted on the web and on social media.

Without the necessary tools to distinguish between true and false, and the appropriate knowledge on how information should be handled and transmitted appropriately, it can be difficult – if not impossible –  to navigate in the digital world in a reasonable, formed and democratic way.

With Digital (Ud)Dannelse – D.U.D.E, the young generation will get to know about the relevant tools to identify and understand the structure of bullying bubbles, lemming effects and pluralistic ignorance as well as the dynamics of anything from the spread of rumors to fake news, and other well-demonstrated socio-informational phenomena that thrive on social media.

Only with an insight into how imperfect or wrongful information processing can lead or has led to collective irrational behavior, the young generation will be able to intervene – and thereby avert – the harmful social dynamics that emerge in the digital world.

Prof. Vincent F. Hendricks and center administrator Maj Riis Poulsen guide the project that is located at the Center for Information and Bubble Studies at the University of Copenhagen. The theoretical foundation for the project is based on research made at CIBS. The research will be mediated via an educational material that includes a specially developed online game. The teaching will be carried out in classrooms by teachers and in youth schools by a crew of digital ambassadors that will make vibrant the subject matter by, for instance, including examples that the young people recognize from their digital daily life. Moreover, an important effort to involve the parents, who obviously have vast interests in the digital education and well-being of their kids, will be carried out.
